Raise: The $79.8M Gift Card Gambit
How a 428-person team is betting big on the secondary gift card market
Raise isn't just another e-commerce site—it's a high-stakes arbitrage play in the $200B gift card market. With $79.8M in revenue and a 1.8/5 Trustpilot rating, they're proving that friction and trust can coexist in a $226M-funded business.
"67% direct traffic on a 1.8-star rating isn't a bug—it's proof the secondary gift card market is desperate for liquidity."
The Secondary Market Engine
Raise's traffic breakdown reveals a counterintuitive story: 67% direct traffic despite a 1.8/5 Trustpilot rating. This suggests a captive audience of gift card sellers who know exactly where to go to offload unwanted cards. The 23% organic search traffic is dominated by transactional keywords like 'gcx' (21K monthly volume) and 'gift card exchange' (11K monthly volume)—not brand searches. They've built a marketplace where sellers come to liquidate, not buyers to browse.
The Trust Paradox
With 916 Trustpilot reviews averaging 1.8/5, Raise faces a fundamental marketplace challenge: sellers are frustrated with verification delays, while buyers are wary of potentially invalid cards. Yet the business continues to grow. This suggests the secondary gift card market has no viable alternatives—Raise has captured the liquidity gap that traditional retailers won't touch. The 1.36M monthly visits prove that despite the noise, the utility outweighs the friction.
The tech stack reveals a pragmatic approach: Tailwind CSS and Bootstrap for rapid UI iteration, AWS CloudFront for global delivery of digital goods, and Zendesk to handle the inevitable support volume from a marketplace with inherent trust issues. They're not building fancy AI—they're building infrastructure that can scale a messy, high-friction business model.
- Secondary gift card liquidity is a $200B+ market with no dominant player
- 67% direct traffic indicates a captive audience of sellers, not buyers
- 1.8/5 rating proves they're solving a real pain point despite execution friction
- Transaction keywords ('gcx', 'gift card exchange') drive 34K+ monthly visits
Raise is a bet on market inefficiency, not product excellence
In a world where gift cards expire unused, they've built the escape hatch—and the numbers prove people will pay for it, even with friction.

Be careful, make sure it's worth the few dollars you will save.
Be careful. Cards which have a pin number are probably safer than ones that don't. I would recommend checking the balance as soon as you get the e-card. Physical cards with the pin# not scratched off are probably the safest. Do not buy ROBLOX cards in large denominations because you don'need a pin# to redeem. In my case I bought a $25 card for my grandson for Christmas on Christmas day. He entered the information on the card and it was invalid. I tried to get a refund but after many emails with customer service they told me they contcted ROBLOX and the card had been redeemed and my money would not be refunded. Good luck if your gift card doesn't work because it's not the same as when it was Raise. It's hard to beleive after being a long time customer they would basically acuse me of trying to scam them out of $21. Not a very reputable company. Be prepared to loose your money if your card doesn't work. Make sure it's worth the few dollars you will save.
Balance is showing but giftcard is not working - no refund
I have purchased for years I am a customer since almost ten years . Customer service was always great until lately . I got a Cinnabon gift-card that showed the correct balance on the website but can’t be added to my purchase in my app . The gift-card might not be activated or something it does not make any sense . But since it showed the balance they won’t refund . Now I need to stop in person to try to use the giftcard in store if it does not work I am gonna be so upset . Advertisement was it works online and in store. No does not work in app . Will update if this was working in store . But customer service was a pain and did not try to fix the problem .
Buyer's Beware
Buyer's Beware. New GCX place is a scam. I had used this site when they Raise and I'm not going to say Raise was without issues. I purchased a Taco Bell gift card that I immediately reported the day after purchasing for being an "invalid card number." Sent the screenshots, gift card information, ect. But ended up taking it as a loss. So, only ripped off once by Raise. Fast forward to this GCX, this site all of a sudden has denied me access to log in to my account, this account has or I guess I will now say HAD 2 or 3 unused gift cards. I know that when I purchased these cards GCX claimed all gift cards came with a 1 year guarantee, but now after reading the most recent reviews on Trust Pilot, I imagine that I have now been ripped off for all the gift cards I previously purchased since it's been well over 90 days since they refuse to allow me to log in to my account. The reason they give is ridiculous, according to GCX they don't recognize my device. Well you people sure recognized it the last few times I was able to log in and purchase the damn gift cards.

Gift cards were used by the time I got…
Gift cards were used by the time I got around to trying to spend. They only give a 90-day guarantee and basically said I was SOL. Terrible and no help. Not worth it.
We understand that experiencing issues while redeeming your gift card is not the experience you expected, and it is not one we strive to deliver. As GCX operates as a marketplace where gift cards are provided by third-party sellers, we strongly encourage redeeming your gift card within the designated timeframe to ensure full coverage. If you believe the refund denial based on the redemption timeframe was applied incorrectly or does not align with our terms, we are happy to initiate a new review for resolution. Please contact us at [email protected], and a specialist will assist you. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Worried about gcx is a scam ...
Worried about gcx is a scam .... 1) Tried to sign up for a new account. Everything LOOKED like it worked .... 2) purchased a gift card. Transaction seemed to go through. 3) BOOM email saying transaction canceled. Email said "goto this site and click on bottom right gcx for help". That site had no such gcx logo on the bottom right. had to find support some other way. Support email said I needed a photo ID .. which is fine, but, they should have said that at account startup, not lock my account and then ask for photo ID. 4) Website says support available only 9 to 5 mon to fri ... and I'm trying to buy gift card on a Saturday. They now have my info and credit card, but I can't purchase anything, and I'm worried they are a scam.
