Udemy: The 72M Visit Behemoth That Still Can't Fix Its Rating
A $490M revenue giant with a 1.8-star Trustpilot score. What's the real story?
Udemy is the internet's most visited online learning platform, yet it's drowning in a sea of 1-star reviews. With 72 million monthly visits, it's a traffic monster, but the trust deficit is the real story for investors and founders.
"Udemy isn't selling courses; it's selling access. The problem? Access without curation leads to a race to the bottom."
The Traffic Engine
Udemy's SEO moat is staggering. They rank for 25% of their traffic organically, but the real power is direct traffic at 69%. This isn't accidental growth; it's brand dominance. The keyword 'udemy' alone drives 3.7M monthly searches. Yet, they also rank for 'canva' and 'coursera'—piggybacking on competitors' demand. This is a growth-at-all-costs strategy that prioritizes volume over brand purity.
The Instructor Paradox
Udemy's 8,572 employees manage a marketplace of thousands of instructors. The model is simple: anyone can teach, everyone can buy. This democratization created a massive catalog but killed quality control. The 1.8-star rating isn't a bug; it's a feature of an open marketplace. For founders, this is the ultimate cautionary tale: scalability often comes at the cost of trust.
The company's tech stack—React, Next.js, Tailwind—reveals a focus on performance and rapid iteration. But with $311M in funding and nearly $500M in revenue, Udemy is still fighting a perception war. The 'u8demy' typo in their top keywords suggests users are searching for them but struggling to find them, a bizarre SEO artifact for a top-600 site.
- Traffic dominance: 72M visits/month with 69% direct traffic
- Revenue scale: $490M from a freemium marketplace model
- Trust crisis: 1.8-star rating from 1,800+ reviews
- SEO arbitrage: Ranking for competitor keywords like 'canva' and 'coursera'
Udemy's Lesson: Scale Doesn't Equal Trust
For investors, the 1.8-star rating is a red flag. For founders, it's a blueprint: dominate traffic, but never forget the trust deficit.

Great platform to learn and courses are at an affordable cost.
I like it.
I think the quantity of classes to choose from is great! I have only had trouble understanding a few instructors.

I enrolled in this course expecting to learn about Electrical design in AutoCAD Electrical. The description focuses on low‑voltage distribution for beginners, but it wasn’t clear that the content would only cover building systems. After watching part of the course only 10 percent and trying to find a relevent part, I realized it didn’t include any HV design topics, which is what I needed. When I tried to request a refund, Udemy didn’t allow it because I had already watched 11% the course while trying to find relevant sections. I understand the policy, but the course content didn’t match my expectations, so it wasn’t useful for my purpose. When I tried to request a refund, Udemy denied it even though I had watched only a small portion of the course. I’ve always trusted Udemy’s refund policy when buying courses, so this experience was disappointing.

I bought course and it is never appear in my app. After i trying to start other course and they just disappeared. There is no support or live chat. Waste of money. It looks like they now not support this project it is live just own live.
