WordPress.org: The 43% Rule

How an open-source project quietly captured the entire web—and why it's still just getting started.

43% of the web runs on WordPress. Not Google. Not Wix. A decentralized open-source project that started as a blogging tool now commands a larger market share than all proprietary competitors combined. This is the story of how.

"WordPress didn't win by outspending competitors—it won by out-collaborating them."

The Infinite Scaling Law

With 9.5M+ employees in its ecosystem (not employees of the company, but contributors to the project), WordPress operates like a digital ant colony. Every plugin, theme, and patch makes the organism stronger. The result? 2.1 billion backlinks—a number that creates an insurmountable SEO moat. Try ranking for 'wordpress plugins' without touching their territory.

The Trust Paradox

Here's the fascinating contradiction: WordPress.org maintains a 1.8/5 Trustpilot rating from 260 reviews, yet its traffic and dominance grow annually. The reviews likely target WordPress.com's paid services, not the open-source software. This reveals a critical insight: product-market fit can survive brand confusion. When your product is infrastructure, users don't need to love the front door—they just need the building to stand.

The tech stack tells a story of pragmatic evolution. They use Tailwind and Bootstrap for rapid UI development, Google Analytics for data (ironic for an open-source purist), and HSTS for security. It's not about ideological purity—it's about shipping at scale. The 13 technologies detected represent a battle-tested arsenal, not a trendy startup stack.

  • WordPress.org's direct traffic (36%) rivals its organic search (42%)—a rare feat indicating brand recall in an open-source project
  • Top keyword 'wordpress' alone drives 1.4M monthly searches, yet they rank for 106K+ variations
  • The project monetizes through ecosystem leverage, not software licensing—Automattic's $1942M revenue comes from WordPress.com, hosting, and services built atop the free core
Doesn't chase enterprise feature requests
Builds for the long tail of 43% of the web
Ignores 'move fast and break things' culture
Prioritizes backward compatibility over hype
Refuses to centralize control
Lets the community fork, extend, and own the roadmap

The Ultimate Founder Playbook

WordPress proves that dominance comes from becoming infrastructure, not a product. Win by making others dependent on your success.

Why are there so many good plugins…

Why are there so many good plugins missing from the official repository? I only recently discovered that many excellent and unique plugins are not available on the official website and must be searched for and found elsewhere. The official repository seems to somehow prioritize plugins developed and sold by WordPress developers. But there are so many good plugins that are not even listed there, such as WP Optimal State!

Overall

Overall, it’s a great website builder, but I wish the premium plan offered more benefits, like the ability to install plugins. Please consider making this change; not everyone can afford to upgrade to the business plan. And as someone said here: "What once felt freeing now feels transactional. And for writers like me, who just want to share words without paying a toll at every step, it’s exhausting." - I totally agree.

Avoid these people at all costs

The sooner people realise how bad WordPress.org is the better. It's run by a small group of narrow minded, thin skinned people who will not accept any criticism at all.
