Xlibris: The Publishing Giant You've Never Heard Of
A $187M revenue, 617-employee hybrid publishing empire with a 2.5-star trust problem
In the shadow of Amazon KDP's 481K monthly searches lies a $187M revenue giant that most founders and investors have completely missed. Xlibris isn't just another self-publishing platform—it's a 617-employee hybrid publishing machine that's been quietly building an empire since the early 2000s.
"Xlibris proves that in publishing, scale doesn't equal satisfaction—1,316 angry reviews say more than their $187M revenue ever could."
The Hybrid Publishing Paradox
Xlibris operates in the sweet spot between traditional and self-publishing, employing 617 people to manage a complex hybrid model. Their 123K monthly visitors generate $187M in revenue—approximately $1,509 per visitor annually. This suggests a high-value, low-volume conversion model typical of service-heavy publishing packages. The 43% direct traffic indicates strong brand recognition, while 38% organic search shows they're still capturing new authors searching for publishing solutions.
The Traffic Paradox
Despite ranking #355,830 globally—far from top-tier—Xlibris captures 123K monthly visits with a curious traffic mix: 'undefined' countries dominate their top 5 traffic sources, suggesting either tracking issues or a truly global, scattered audience. Their top keyword 'desi tale' (1,900 monthly volume) reveals a niche focus on South Asian storytelling, while their secondary keyword 'xlibris bookstore' (130 volume) shows they're competing in the physical book space, not just digital.
The tech stack tells a story of modernization attempts layered over legacy systems. They're using Vite and Tailwind CSS for frontend speed, but still rely on jQuery and Bootstrap—classic signs of a company evolving its digital presence while maintaining 15+ year-old infrastructure. The presence of Trustpilot (2.5 stars, 1,316 reviews) and Facebook Pixel suggests they're aggressively tracking reputation and conversions, but the low rating indicates systemic service delivery issues.
- Revenue-per-visitor of $1,509 suggests premium service packages, not commodity publishing
- 617 employees vs. 123K monthly visits = extreme human-to-traffic ratio, confirming high-touch service model
- Top keyword 'amazon kdp' (481K volume) shows they're targeting authors researching alternatives to Amazon's platform
- 2.5-star Trustpilot rating with 1,316 reviews indicates consistent service delivery problems at scale
The Billion-Dollar Publishing Playbook
Xlibris proves hybrid publishing can scale to $187M—but their 2.5-star rating shows the brutal trade-offs of high-touch author services. For founders: this is a blueprint for monetizing expertise, not just software.

Unwavering Endorsement of Xlibris…
Unwavering Endorsement of Xlibris Publishing As an author committed to delivering insightful and impactful literature, I have had the privilege of partnering with Xlibris Publishing for the release of my four books: • A Comprehensive Guide to Tokenization • Unlocking XRP: The Future of Digital Finance • Mastering the Stock Market: A Comprehensive Guide to Investing and Trading • The Ultimate Guide to Cryptocurrency: From Beginner to Trader From the outset, Xlibris demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence. Their team provided expert guidance, ensuring that each manuscript was transformed into a professionally crafted book. The editorial support was meticulous, the design team brought a creative vision to life, and the production process was seamless, resulting in high-quality publications that met my expectations. Beyond the technical aspects, Xlibris's dedication to author success was evident. They facilitated global distribution, making my works accessible to readers worldwide, and offered marketing services that enhanced visibility. Their customer service was responsive and supportive, addressing any queries promptly and professionally. For authors serious about their craft and seeking a publishing partner that combines professionalism with a genuine passion for literature, I wholeheartedly recommend Xlibris. Their comprehensive services and dedication to quality make them a standout choice in the publishing industry.
Thank you so much for your kind words and continued trust in Xlibris. We’re honored to have partnered with you on four impactful titles and are delighted to know our editorial, design, and production teams helped bring your vision to life. It’s wonderful to hear our global distribution and marketing support have made a difference, and we’re grateful for your wholehearted recommendation.
I published my book (Children of the Rainbow
I published my book (Children of the Rainbow) with Xlibris in 2022, Even though it is sold via more than 50 websites all over the world, I HAVEN'T BEEN PAID A PENNY. = Thank you for your prompt response and attention to this matter. I would like to clarify that I was never informed or required to create an account within the EFT system. Furthermore, it seems impractical that a transfer to our local bank account via IBAN cannot be facilitated.
Thank you for sharing your experience—we understand how concerning this must be. At this time, we can only process royalty payments via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) for authors with bank accounts in the USA, UK, or Australia. We’re actively working on a solution to support international authors outside these regions and will keep you updated as we make progress.
On April 1
On April 1, I got a call from someone at the company telling me that I'd "'missed" two payments. This comes to over $1000. It's odd that my rent, which is 4x the amount of one payment, went through without a problem, as did the rest of my bills. When I tried to contact them via the email on the message, it was sent back. A fraudulent email address! This casts no small amount of doubt on my part as to the company's legitimacy. I have had major second thoughts about my decision to let this company handle my book. I had trouble with them on my first book. I should've learned my lesson. Tip to writers looking at Xlibris to take care of their book: walk away!! I don't trust them. How can something be "miskeyed" when THEY'RE the ones keying it in? This company is a fraud and a scam!!!t Take your work elsewhere, authors!
Thank you for your feedback. We understand your concern and want to clarify that our payment system is a two-step process, which can sometimes cause confusion. It’s possible that one of the account details was inadvertently miskeyed, leading to the missed payments. Regarding the email, it was a system-generated message clearly marked "do not reply." We apologize for any confusion that may have caused and encourage you to reach out to our support team directly so we can resolve this promptly. We’re here to help and would appreciate the chance to make things right.
Do not use Xlibris they will bleed you…
Do not use Xlibris they will bleed you thousands of dollars and not provide any commission using high pressure sales stressful tactics.
My complaint is that the book is on…
My complaint is that the book is on Amazon apparently being sold by Xlibris, but as others have stated I don’t receive a dime. Also I am trying to sell my copies on Amazon but can’t because when I go back and search for my ad, only the publisher’s copies show as available. And I don’t get the option of selling it as “new”, only “used”.
Royalty accuracy is extremely important to us. If there is a reason you think we have not captured all book sales for the royalty report, please contact us. Second, on Amazon listings and the “used” designation: Amazon controls how books are displayed and categorized on its platform. When a book is listed under an assigned ISBN, Amazon associates that ISBN with the publisher of record. As a result: • Copies sold by third parties or resellers may appear as “used,” even if they are new. • Authors selling personal copies may not be given the option to list them as “new” if Amazon already recognizes the ISBN as tied to the publisher’s primary listing.
