57hours: The Airbnb for Adventure Guides
A $11.6M marketplace connecting outdoor enthusiasts with elite local guides
While REI Adventures and Airbnb Experiences fight for the mass market, 57hours is quietly building a $11.6M empire by targeting the serious outdoor enthusiast. They're not selling tours—they're selling access to the world's best local guides, turning weekend warriors into expedition-ready adventurers.
"They're not competing with Viator—they're building the premium layer above it, where expertise matters more than price."
The Guide-First Strategy
57hours operates on a counter-intuitive model: they prioritize guide quality over booking volume. With 51 employees serving 197K monthly visitors, they maintain a 1:3,862 employee-to-visitor ratio—significantly leaner than traditional tour platforms. This efficiency comes from their focus on high-value bookings where guides are vetted experts, not just activity providers. Their Trustpilot rating of 4.4/5 from 64 reviews suggests they're maintaining quality over quantity, though the review count hints at a concentrated user base.
The SEO Moat
With 56% of traffic coming organically, 57hours has cracked the outdoor enthusiast search intent. Their keyword strategy reveals a sophisticated understanding of niche queries: they rank for specific experiences like "skiing Tuckerman's Ravine" and "Southern California best hikes" rather than generic terms. This long-tail approach creates a defensible moat—while competitors fight for "adventure tours," 57hours captures travelers already committed to specific activities. The 980 monthly searches for "57hours" alone shows strong brand recognition in a fragmented market.
The company's tech stack tells a story of pragmatic growth. They use jQuery and Bootstrap—older but battle-tested technologies—alongside modern PWA capabilities and lazy loading for performance. This isn't a team chasing the latest frameworks; they're building a functional marketplace that works. The presence of Swiper and Slick suggests a mobile-first experience, critical for their on-the-go user base. Their social presence across YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram indicates a content strategy that educates rather than just sells.
- Niche dominance: They own specific adventure verticals rather than competing broadly
- Guide curation: Quality over quantity creates premium positioning
- SEO mastery: Long-tail keywords build sustainable organic traffic
- Lean operations: 51 employees generating $11.6M revenue shows efficient scaling
- Trust signals: 4.4/5 rating with focused review management
The Playbook for Niche Marketplaces
57hours proves that in crowded markets, depth beats breadth. They're not trying to be everything to everyone—just the undisputed leader for serious outdoor adventurers.

Portugal biking tour to Fatima
We did a Portugal biking tour to Fatima. Local guide was great and supportive. We had some issues at start of our trip but we were sorted out by 57 hours. Thanks to the team for looking into our issues and rectifying the situation. Company is great for organising off-the-beaten-track type tours.

Iceland is truly spectacular with its valleys, mountains and deserts, truly is the land of Fire and Ice, because we certainly seen both. Our tour company with Arctic Hiking and Expeditions thru 57 hours was transforming. Einar and Inga were the most outstanding tour guides, experienced and incredibly comfortable to spend time with. Our group of 10 from all parts of the world became instant family as we hiked the iconic Laugavegar Trail. I already miss being there and the trail will always be in my heart.
Highlights of the TMB
We had the pleasure of hiking with Paul Spackman during our TMB trek, and we can say without hesitation that he is one of the most knowledgeable, thoughtful, and inspiring guides we've encountered. From the moment we set out, it was clear that he possessed a deep respect for nature and a passion for sharing it. Paul created an experience that was both enriching and unforgettable, which we credit to Paul's skill, enthusiasm and care. We were impressed by how Paul tailored the hike to the needs and pace of the group and adapted the route to avoid heavy traffic on the trail. Always adding his personal touch of humour, anecdotes and introducing friends and associates along the trail, Paul made the trek feel communal and inclusive. The office support team were outstanding. The professionalism, clear communication and care taken to ensure our group was in good hands were truly appreciated and made our hike smooth and stress-free, allowing us to enjoy our journey fully. (Who would have thought snow in July?) The accommodations were comfortable, clean and thoughtfully designed. We truly appreciated the warm hospitality and attention to detail. The hearty homemade dishes and warm service brought everyone together, and each meal felt personal, comforting and deeply satisfying. 5-star service! We would recommend Paul and 57 hours to anyone seeking a guided tour; they would be in excellent hands. Lee Thorogood and Sharon Evans, CANADA.
Hiking New Zealand
New Zealand has long been on my "bucket list" and the trip I booked through 57 Hours using locally owned and operated Hiking New Zealand (HNZ) met and exceeded expectations. The hiking guides were top notch, great sense of humour, enthusiastic, and attentive to all guests needs. The food and accommodation was great. The picnic lunches on the south Island were amazing, with the guides carrying a smorgasbord, lol. The guides were knowledgeable about the history of NZ and the Maori including the the indigenous plants, trees and birds of the country. Learning about the people, culture and environment and seeing the natural beauty of the country is what enriches my hiking trips. It is what gave this trip a 5 star rating. 57 was diligent in answering all my questions during the booking process and where it couldn't HNZ did. If I could make a suggestion for 57, the 15 minute scheduled call is sometimes not sufficient to cover all questions. You then have to book another call which based on availability could be a few days later. It makes completing the booking process a bit cumbersome. Otherwise a great experience. I would recommend it.
Highly recommend
Diane was quick to respond. Nelson was a great local driver. Madeira’s hikes were well documented and spectacular
