OpenTable: The 800-Pound Gorilla with a Yelp Problem
48M monthly visits, but a 1.4-star Trustpilot rating tells a brutal truth about the dining industry.
OpenTable doesn't just dominate restaurant reservations; it owns the entire digital dining infrastructure. But with 48M monthly visits and a near-1-star rating, the platform is a masterclass in B2B success clashing with consumer frustration.
"OpenTable is the rare platform that is indispensable to restaurants while being actively disliked by many of their customers."
The Moat is Habit, Not Tech
With 48% of traffic being direct, OpenTable has achieved what few do: brand ubiquity. When people want to book a table, they don't search 'reservation platform'—they type 'OpenTable.' This direct traffic is a defensive moat worth hundreds of millions in saved marketing spend.
The SEO Juggernaut
While 35% of traffic comes from organic search, the real power lies in long-tail domination. Ranking for 'restaurants open on Christmas day' (79K volume) and 'restaurants near me' (586K volume) allows OpenTable to capture intent at the exact moment of decision, bypassing the need for brand recognition.
The Trustpilot rating of 1.4/5 from 223 reviews is the elephant in the room. For a consumer-facing platform with 48M users, this is catastrophic. It signals a product that prioritizes restaurant partners over diners, likely due to cancellation fees, no-show policies, and rigid booking management that leaves the end-user holding the bag.
- Dominant Brand Equity: 'OpenTable' is the verb for booking, with 422K monthly branded searches.
- B2B Lock-in: The revenue model ($498.4M) relies on restaurant subscriptions and per-cover fees, creating high switching costs.
- Traffic Concentration Risk: 88.9% of traffic comes from undefined (likely US/Canada), making the business vulnerable to regional economic downturns.
The B2B Giant with a Consumer Identity Crisis
OpenTable wins on infrastructure and SEO, but the next phase of growth requires fixing the user experience that powers the entire platform.

I frequent City Oyster in Delray Beach…
I frequent City Oyster in Delray Beach Florida. The food is always delicious and consistent. What makes the experience even better is our waiter Matheo Nulich. He is outstanding. One of a kind. Always willing to do anything to make our meal perfect. He is a true professional. We get disappointed when he is not there.

My waitress was so helpful and very informative she knew the menu in and out. She had a great personality and was very nice and for that I will come back to eat here or just have drinks. My waitress name was Paris in the Alliance, TX area.
Dinner at Sapore Italiano …
Have had dinner at Sapore Italiano numerous times and always enjoyed our experience. Last night we were seated in a dining room with 2 large groups that were very loud. We being a party of 2 had to shout at each other to hear. What was supposed to be a relaxing experience turned out to be a very aggravating experience. Large parties should not be mixed in with tables of 2 or 4.
Terrible Point System
I really enjoy the convenience of using OpenTable — it makes finding and booking reservations super easy. However, I’m extremely disappointed with their points system, which feels like a rip-off. I recently realized that my points were constantly disappearing, even though I was regularly using the app and earning more. It turns out they expire after 3 years, which I think is unfair — especially for loyal, active users. Most reward programs don’t remove points if you continue to earn them, and OpenTable really should follow that standard. Until they change this policy, the rewards program feels misleading and frustrating, which takes away from an otherwise great service.
"Confirmed reservations"?
Just hours before our confirmed reservation, we were notified that the restaurant had canceled our booking. We were informed that the restaurant had scheduled an employee appreciation event and would not be open. Unfortunately, this last-minute cancellation caused significant inconvenience, as our reservation was coordinated with a scheduled train departure and required us to quickly notify friends and adjust plans. This experience raises concerns about the reliability of “confirmed” reservations made through OpenTable. Based on this experience, we will reconsider using the platform for future reservations that involve time-sensitive plans.
