SoundCloud: The Unfiltered Pulse of Music
How a platform for creators became the internet's most chaotic and essential music discovery engine.
Before Spotify's algorithmic perfection, before TikTok's viral trends, there was SoundCloud: the raw, unfiltered engine of the internet's music scene. It's not just a streaming service; it's the chaotic garage where every genre from hyperpop to drill was born. But with 123 million monthly visits and a polarizing reputation, is SoundCloud a thriving ecosystem or a graveyard of abandoned tracks?
"SoundCloud isn't where you go to listen to music; it's where you go to find what hasn't been discovered yet."
The Creator's Dilemma
With 1,020 employees and $211.5M in revenue, SoundCloud operates at a scale that demands profitability. Yet, its core value proposition remains the same: democratizing music distribution. The 72% direct traffic proves a fiercely loyal user base—artists and fans who bypass search engines to land directly on the platform. This is the 'SoundCloud rap' generation and the bedroom producer ecosystem, a community that trusts the platform's rawness over polished corporate streaming.
The Discovery Paradox
The data reveals a fascinating split: only 25% of traffic comes from organic search. The vast majority comes direct or via social. This suggests SoundCloud isn't a 'search engine' for music—it's a social network. The top keywords are the brand itself, proving high brand recall. However, the 'undefined' top countries hint at a global reach that is perhaps not fully measured or localized, a potential blind spot in their data analytics.
The Trustpilot rating of 1.3/5 is a stark warning sign for product managers. While the tech stack is modern (Next.js, PWA, AWS), the user experience appears to be a point of friction. For founders, this is a classic case study: you can have massive scale (123M visits) and a dominant market position (#299 global rank) while simultaneously alienating a portion of your user base. The revenue ($211.5M) is healthy, but the $542.8M in funding suggests they are still in a growth or stabilization phase rather than pure profit mode.
- The 'Garage' Effect: Unlike Spotify's polished UI, SoundCloud's interface (powered by Tailwind and DaisyUI) feels utilitarian, prioritizing upload and play speed over aesthetic perfection.
- Global, But Fragmented: Traffic is heavily skewed by undefined regions, suggesting either a massive international user base or tracking inefficiencies that obscure true market penetration.
- The Algorithm is You: With low organic search reliance, the platform is driven by what users share, repost, and comment on, creating a feedback loop that defines trends rather than following them.
The Internet's Music Archive
SoundCloud's value isn't in its perfect interface, but in its imperfect archive of every trend that ever happened.

paid artist subscription made SoundCloud experience worse
Ive been using Soundcloud for about 5 years. I appreciate access to new artists and music. I decided to upgrade to artist subscription last year because I wanted to update my tracks and now regret it. The platform actually became worse, not better, after I paid for a subscription. More annoying ads, less engagement and now every time I log on I get a cookies opt in notices, which was not happening when I had the free acct. Serious disincentive to use the app or continue my subscription. Such a bummer that soundcloud could not figure out a way to scale without driving users away. Oh well Silas
Long time user but recent…
I have been a long user but recent disappointing experience with them due to poor customer service, despite the platform being good for artists.
I can’t access my paid pro account at all. I’ve charged me quite a lot of money. I can’t access it. I can’t get logged in.
Great, when it works signed up to a pro account paid them quite a bit of money for an annual subscription which I cannot access. I’ve been trying for a week now to get in touch with their customer service. I might as well be spitting in the wind absolutely embarrassing.
SoundCloud has AI problem and support sucks
- SoundCloud is infested with loser NPCs who spam 200+ AI generated crap every day and shoves them in "Related tracks" to tracks by REAL producers like Modal Nodes, Nimda, Sharks and the others. I always report them for spam. - SoundCloud also puts irrelevant songs made by literally nobodies under stuff that I listen to. - Its customer service sucks and they have replaced the contact form with a stupid AI chat bot. I can't even report tracks for actual reasons.
Imposible to make them give me access…
Imposible to make them give me access to my artist with the songs uploaded by jumbstr. It have cost me two month payment of wasted money.
