Wix: The 34M Visit Website That's Changing the Game
How a 259-person company built a $1.2B empire by making web design accessible
In a world where building a website used to require coding expertise, Wix flipped the script. With 34 million monthly visitors and 85 million backlinks, they've built more than a website builder—they've built an ecosystem. But here's the catch: despite being a tech giant, their team is just 259 people. That's the kind of leverage every founder dreams of.
"Wix isn't just building websites—they're building a moat so deep that even GoDaddy can't compete on their home turf."
The Traffic Paradox
Here's what's fascinating: 66% of Wix's traffic is direct. Not organic search, not paid ads—people typing 'wix.com' directly into their browser. That's brand loyalty at scale. While competitors fight for every keyword, Wix owns the destination. Their top keyword? 'Wix login' with 169K monthly searches. Users don't just visit—they return.
The Global Play
The data shows something intriguing: 33.5% of traffic comes from undefined sources, followed by Japan (6.9%) and other markets. This isn't accidental. Wix has built a truly global product that transcends language barriers. Their Japanese login page alone gets 26K monthly searches. While US competitors fight for domestic dominance, Wix is quietly winning internationally.
But the real story is in the tech stack. Wix runs on React and Tailwind CSS, with Zendesk for support and Sentry for monitoring. This isn't a legacy platform—it's a modern, scalable infrastructure. The 259 employees aren't just maintaining code; they're innovating at scale. That's 4.7 million monthly visits per employee. That's the kind of efficiency that makes VCs salivate.
- Direct traffic dominance (66%) signals unbeatable brand recognition
- 85M backlinks create an SEO moat that's nearly impossible to replicate
- Global footprint with strong presence in Japan and undefined markets
- Trustpilot rating of 3.7/5 from 26K+ reviews shows room for improvement
The Wix Playbook: Own the Destination
While others fight for search traffic, Wix built a brand so strong that users come directly. That's not just a website builder—that's a category-defining company.

Locked into a poor experience
I used Wix successfully for a number of years, when I had a static site that I built and forgot about. Now, when I tried to build a more attracting user-focused site, using my own design requirements, I was unable to use Wix. I built out a great site using AI HTML, but I couldn't upload to Wix, because they force you to use their templates, OR put custom HTML code into iframe, which is not SEO-friendly. (Build out custom code, line by line, element by element?! This was the option suggested to me.) So I put my site up on Netlify and tried to redirect my owned domain. Easy, I thought. Many days later--how wrong I was. Here's why I truly dislike Wix: Wix is doing three things that are objectively hostile to how modern infra works: 1. Registrar lock + no nameserver delegation This removes your ability to choose your DNS provider — which is foundational control. 2. Opaque DNS behavior You can set records that are “correct” and still fail real-world TLS validation. That’s unacceptable for production use. And unbelievably frustrating and time wasting. 3. All-in-one illusion They make it feel like hosting, DNS, email, and registrar are one thing — until you try to leave, and suddenly everything is coupled. This is a vendor captivity problem, and it really stinks.

I took over a Wix site via transfer and was required to add my card details, inheriting an existing paid plan. I did not intend to renew, but the cancellation and renewal process was unclear in a transferred account and the plan renewed automatically. I cancelled immediately once charged (within 48 hours) and requested a refund, but received no response for weeks. Support is almost entirely AI-driven and it was effectively impossible to reach a human to review the situation or request goodwill. I still technically have access to the site, but the experience left me feeling that resolving genuine billing issues is unnecessarily difficult. Worth being very careful with auto-renewals and transfers.
Wix doesn't support a growing company
We used Wix for over 5 years. We were fine with the limited functionality of Wix during this time; however, we made the decision to change to an SEO marketing firm, they don't use Wix due to the limitations. We had a lot of discrepancy between what various reports while using Wix. Wix claims we had less than 100 monthly visits and Google claims we had thousands of monthly visits. There is no customer support with Wix - the "customer service reps" are AI, if they are people, well, um, i would beg to differ based off of their inability to understand and think outside the box.
