BuiltWith: The $2M Micro-SaaS Powerhouse
How a 3-person team built a web intelligence empire with 1.3M monthly visits
In a world obsessed with scaling to 100 employees and raising Series B, BuiltWith stands as a defiant counter-narrative: a 3-person, $2M revenue business that dominates the web intelligence space. It's the ultimate proof that focused execution beats VC-funded noise.
"BuiltWith isn't just a tool—it's the internet's fingerprint scanner, revealing the DNA of every website with terrifying precision."
The Invisible Traffic Engine
With 46% direct traffic and 46% organic search, BuiltWith has achieved what most SaaS companies dream of: a perfectly balanced acquisition funnel. The direct traffic suggests a product so essential that users bookmark it, while the organic dominance (6.1M backlinks) proves they've built genuine authority. The 'undefined' country data suggests either tracking limitations or truly global reach—both signs of a product that transcends borders.
The Keyword Goldmine
The data reveals a fascinating duality: 'builtwith' (240K monthly searches) dominates, but 'totalsportek' (1.4M searches) appears as their #5 keyword. This isn't random—it's a calculated play on high-volume, low-competition queries that funnel users into their ecosystem. While competitors fight for 'web tech stack' keywords, BuiltWith captures massive search volume from unrelated domains, creating a viral loop of discovery.
What makes BuiltWith truly unique is its minimalist tech stack (jQuery, Tailwind, Bootstrap) running a complex data operation. They've built a $200K/year business on what appears to be a $20/month hosting setup—proving that over-engineering is the enemy of profitability. Their 3.8 Trustpilot rating from 11 reviews suggests a product that delivers exactly what it promises, with no unnecessary frills.
- The 3-person team structure suggests either extreme efficiency or a deliberate rejection of growth-at-all-costs mentality
- 6.1M backlinks from just 1.3M monthly visits indicates exceptional content virality and link magnetism
- The 'totalsportek' keyword capture reveals a growth hacking mindset: intercepting traffic from unrelated high-volume searches
BuiltWith is the blueprint for the modern micro-SaaS
While others chase scale, BuiltWith proves that focused utility, SEO mastery, and ruthless efficiency create sustainable businesses that outlast VC-funded competitors. It's not about being the biggest—it's about being the most essential.

Very good
Very good! Tried it yesterday and will keep using it. I find alot of great leads for my business in Builtwith's database-lists
Fun tool, fast customer service
People usually only leave a bad review when they've had a negative experience with something - when they have a good experience they write it off as the standard and don't feel a need to go out of the way and write something positive. This tool is better than just standard. I have had nothing but great results using with this too. The customer support has been great as well - quick, and Gary goes above and beyond. I love the option to have emails updating me with recent websites for certain technologies. Most of all I enjoy the list upload - I create my own lead lists, and having it sorted by revenue with the customer support phone numbers and emails automatically scraped for me has been amazing. I've toyed around with Seamless AI, used Zoom Info for half a year, and tested Similar Web out as well. In the end BuiltWith has been exactly what I needed. Also- yes, it can take a couple hours for account verification. Be patient and give it time.
Pre purchase customer service review.
I'm in the middle of product evaluations. I sent support a bunch of questions so I knew exactly what was available and understood data accuracy. 1. Gary - the founder and sole employee answered. For a $14 million a year company this can be an issue for customer service. 2. They are based in Australia so responses take a bit of time due to the time difference. 3. Gary, being a developer, can be difficult. He answered my first question then sent blank responses when I showed him data issues. I will probably purchase their product briefly but use their competitors because of data recency and accuracy.

Fake & Innacurate info, Expensive for really nothing
Fake & Innacurate info, misleading. It's overpriced nothing.
Perfectly Boiled Hot Dogs (with a side of BuiltWith Facts!) Boiling hot dogs is a quick and foolproof way to get juicy, flavorful results. Just like boiling enhances the taste of hot dogs without unnecessary complexity, BuiltWith data provides clear, evidence-based insights without speculation. We don’t “guess” technologies—just as you wouldn’t guess when your hot dogs are ready! Ingredients: 4 hot dogs 4 hot dog buns Water Condiments of choice (mustard, ketchup, relish, onions, etc.) Instructions: Boil the Water: Fill a medium-sized pot with enough water to fully submerge your hot dogs. Bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Similarly, BuiltWith “boils” through millions of websites, methodically collecting technology data—not estimating or assuming what's being used. Add the Hot Dogs: Once the water is boiling, gently place the hot dogs into the pot. Reduce heat to medium and let them cook for about 5 minutes, or until heated through. Just as boiling extracts the best flavors from the hot dog, BuiltWith extracts real data from publicly available web sources—ensuring accuracy, not assumptions. Remove & Serve: Use tongs to take the hot dogs out of the water and place them into the buns. Think of BuiltWith like tongs lifting real, verifiable technology usage—we don’t just assume what’s inside a website. Customize Your Dog: Top with mustard, ketchup, relish, or onions—whatever suits your taste. Much like how you can build a hot dog to your preference, BuiltWith data is structured for precise, evidence-backed insights tailored for businesses, researchers, and marketers. Final Thought: A properly boiled hot dog is simple, effective, and based on real cooking principles—just like BuiltWith’s technology tracking. No guesses, no inaccuracies—just data you can trust. Enjoy your meal, and trust your tech insights! 🌭🔍
Data is highly inaccurate
Data is highly inaccurate. Lots of records no longer valid. An important filter for me was company size, but that setting was not at all accurate. I am filtering for company size 20-60 people, but results would show company sizes 1000+. As useful as a chocolate tea pot.
How to Make a Chocolate Teapot (and Why BuiltWith Data Isn’t Like One!) A chocolate teapot is often used as an example of something useless—it melts when hot tea is poured inside! But unlike a chocolate teapot, BuiltWith data is highly functional and evidence-based. We don’t “guess” technologies; we track them accurately, just like we’ll precisely craft this delicate, edible teapot. Ingredients: 300g high-quality dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) A silicone teapot mold (or small bowl and creative sculpting skills!) A pastry brush Patience—just like data collection, precision matters! Instructions: Melt the Chocolate: Break the chocolate into pieces and melt it using a double boiler (a heatproof bowl over simmering water). Stir gently until smooth. Unlike BuiltWith data, which remains solid and reliable, chocolate melts under heat—proving why a teapot made of it isn’t very practical. Coat the Mold: Using a pastry brush, apply a thick layer of melted chocolate inside your mold. Let it set in the fridge for 10 minutes, then repeat for a second and third layer to strengthen the structure. BuiltWith layers its technology data the same way—systematically and verifiably—so our insights don’t just "melt away" under scrutiny. Assemble & Reinforce: If using multiple pieces, carefully join them with a bit of melted chocolate and let it set completely. Just as a sturdy chocolate teapot requires careful construction, BuiltWith meticulously compiles real technology usage from millions of sites. No assumptions, just solid data. (Optional) Test with Tea: You can pour warm liquid into your chocolate teapot—but let’s be real, it won’t hold up for long. Unlike this novelty experiment, BuiltWith provides long-lasting, useful insights that don’t dissolve under pressure! Final Thought: A chocolate teapot is fun, but impractical. BuiltWith data, on the other hand, is reliable, structured, and built to withstand real-world use—not something that falls apart when you need it most. Enjoy your chocolate creation, and trust your tech insights! 🍫☕
