HERE: The Map Platform You're Not Using
Despite massive scale, HERE Technologies struggles to win developer hearts. Here's why.
Google Maps dominates consumer consciousness, but in the B2B mapping wars, HERE Technologies is the giant hiding in plain sight. With 8,968 employees and nearly $1.9B in revenue, this Nokia-spawned powerhouse powers everything from Audi dashboards to Amazon logistics—yet it remains a ghost in the developer ecosystem. Why is the world's most valuable data company invisible to most founders?
"HERE is the map company your car trusts, but your startup ignores. That's a strategic mistake."
The Enterprise Ghost
HERE's traffic profile reveals its true nature: 48% direct traffic vs 37% organic search. This isn't a platform developers discover—it's a platform enterprises mandate. When BMW or DHL needs location data, they call HERE. When a startup needs a map, they Google it. The 1.5/5 Trustpilot rating from 31 reviews tells a stark story: HERE wins contracts, not hearts. Their sales cycle is C-suite to C-suite, not API call to API call.
The Revenue Mirage
With $1.86B in revenue but only $1.3M in funding, HERE operates on a legacy model that's nearly impossible to replicate. This isn't a startup story—it's a corporate spin-off surviving on decades of mapping patents and automotive partnerships. The 18.8M backlinks suggest SEO authority, but the 37% organic traffic reveals a platform that doesn't convert searchers into users. They rank for 'here' (71K volume) but not for 'maps api' or 'location platform'—the terms that actually drive developer adoption.
The tech stack reveals the same enterprise DNA: Swiper, Tailwind, Bootstrap, Ant Design—standard corporate web components, not the bleeding-edge tooling that attracts engineers. No mention of GraphQL, WebAssembly, or edge computing. HERE builds for reliability, not innovation velocity. Their PWA implementation is competent but uninspired. They're not shipping features that make developers tweet; they're shipping features that make procurement officers sign.
- Dominates automotive (40% of new cars use HERE)
- Owns hyper-accurate HD maps for autonomous driving
- Powers Amazon's last-mile delivery routing
- Revenue dwarfs Mapbox's $100M but lacks developer mindshare
The Silent Giant's Playbook
HERE wins by being invisible infrastructure, not a developer darling. For B2B founders: partner with them, don't compete. For investors: look elsewhere—this is a cash cow, not a rocket ship.

Overpriced and clumbsy
Clumbsy old technology to download. Only want south of England but need to have all of UK, all of Europe and all of Russia. £89 for 1 year for naps and live traffic (using my data) is expensive. Have since found TomTom at £19 per year so will be using that via Apple CarPlay in future.
I purchased an upgrade to the NAV…
I purchased an upgrade to the NAV system installed in my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and had a poor experience from the beginning. The purchase experience was fraught with minor problems that required a restart of the process several time before it could be completed. This company is the only provider of the upgraded software and I hope Jeep and Chrysler knows the type of service they are providing to the Jeep customers. Once the software was delivered, the instructions were confusing and since this preamble to the install instructions was printed in "bold" font, I assumed it was important. I read it three times and finally decided that I better check with Customer Service before I began the install. The written instructions said to install the "Software Update" USB (marked with an "MR" or "QR" before installing the "Map Update". My second USB is marked with "Map Update". I spoke with a female Cust. Rep. at 1:35pm EDT on 5/31/22 and she told me to install the USB marked "Map Update" first and then follow that with the installation of the 2nd USB marked ASO QR. I was hesitant to proceed with her verbal instruction, but decided she knew better that I did so I just wanted to indicate the Rep. that provided this information (just in case that was a problem later). When I asked for her name, the woman told me their company doesn't permit them to give out their names. I said okay, then can you give me your Company ID--she said they don't give that info either. I asked if she can provide her initials--the answer was still no. I don't know what Here, LLC is trying to conceal, but now I was more concerned. I asked to speak to a supervisor and the woman disconnected the telephone line. The Customer Rep. is a very poor example of what service is all about and I will certainly tell my fellow RV owners that drive Jeep as their tow car about my experience. My next note will be to Jeep & Chrysler management.
They Keep Sending Invoices To a Deleted Account
After being served my first paid invoice a month ago, I deleted my account. I used their API, but having crossed the paywall, I decided to terminate the bond as soon as they charged me. Great was my astonishment when a month later I received another HERE invoice. The date was 11/15/2025, despite the entire month of inactivity. I don't plan to cover thin air expenses, incurred due to either their lack of a reliable usage tracking system or malice. I contacted their support with no response. It smells scammy. Such a brazen attitude usually stems from the position of a government contractor, which makes commercial customers less of a priority for a business. Avoid this company at all costs.
Obsolete 4 yr Old MAP update Shipped
I ordered a NAV system map update from HERE.COM for my 2012 Honda CRV on August 12, 2025. The product was immediately shipped, but upon receipt the product is a 2021 MAP update indicating Q419. Only an idiot would pay $100 for an obsolete 4 year old map update and I am completely shocked that this was not indicated when I entered my VIN and system information from the car.
