iiNet: The Rebel ISP That Outsmarted Giants
How a Perth startup became Australia's most resilient challenger brand
While Telstra and Optus fight over corporate contracts, iiNet quietly built a cult following of 1.1M monthly visitors who trust their brand more than the industry giants. The secret? They turned customer service into a weapon.
"iiNet doesn't sell internet—they sell trust in an industry that's lost it."
The Customer-First Paradox
With 1,958 Trustpilot reviews at 1.3/5 stars, iiNet faces the brutal reality of Australian telco complaints. Yet their 64% direct traffic—nearly double their organic search—proves something rare: customers who stay despite the noise. The 38,490 monthly searches for just 'iinet' show a brand that's become shorthand for 'home internet' in Australia.
The Toolbox Moat
iiNet's 6,040 monthly searches for 'iinet toolbox' reveal their secret weapon—a proprietary management portal that competitors can't replicate. While others push customers to generic apps, iiNet built a sticky ecosystem. Their 25M backlinks didn't come from SEO tricks; they came from years of being the ISP that actually answers the phone.
- Direct traffic dominance: 64% of visitors type iiNet directly—higher than most media companies
- Search volume supremacy: 38K monthly branded searches vs. 24M 'speed test' queries (their tool owns the category)
- Niche keyword control: 7K 'iinet login' searches show a captive audience returning daily
The 997 employees and $453.6M revenue tell the story of a mid-sized player punching above its weight. While giants spend billions on marketing, iiNet's tech stack—Tailwind, DaisyUI, and New Relic—shows a modern, agile engineering culture. Their LinkedIn presence is modest, but their Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook engagement reveals a brand that understands community-building better than most tech companies.
iiNet is Australia's most underrated infrastructure company
They've turned the unsexy business of selling internet into a brand that generates 25M backlinks and 1.1M monthly visits without spending like a Fortune 500 company. For founders: this is how you win in regulated markets—build tools, own the relationship, and make customer service your product.

Ban the robots!
As the result of my credit card being compromised I needed to restore multiple direct debits for a range of companies. This process ranged from easy to extremely frustrating. iiNet was the latter. Eventually, after spending needless hours listening to a robot and pressing numerous numbers, I mistakenly selected the number for Sales. Bingo! I got a real person - because a robot can’t sell me something! Faisal listened, took my new card details and solved my problem in minutes. GIVE THAT MAN A PAY RISE!! However, I was still receiving multiple emails and texts days later, threatening to suspend my internet service - I use the term loosely!
How do I register a zero score
How do I register a zero score, I have a problem with them WPS switch on the VX420-G2h router. whilst attempting to set up an accessory the switch was inactive. It took nearly 45 mins before a techn person came to the phone and after trying to describe my problem all he could suggest was to contact the manufacturor of the accessory. Was not interested in the fact the router was faulty, STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOB. GO ANY WHERE ELSE. WORST SERVICEI HAVE RECEIVED FROM A PROVIDER
Don't. Go literally anywhere else. You're worth more than this.
I was with iinet since the ADSL days. After the absolute debacle last month where I moved house and they cancelled the wrong address ("sorry, we entered the wrong account number by mistake") I have moved to another ISP yet Im still getting billed by iinet. I’ve called them multiple times over the past few weeks, each time dealing with the customer service equivalent of a bag of sawdust. Completely unhelpful, and absolutely incompetent. They won't cancel my account, ignore my requests for callbacks and the only way for them to take any action is to make a complaint to the TIO, so that's been done for the second time in as many weeks. They've withdrawn my cancellation request multiple times, taken money from our account for a service that isn't even connected anymore, and anytime you have to deal with their 'customer service' call centre they'll feign ignorance or just outright say that you're wrong. I've worked for telco companies before. I know what I'm doing. They're con artists. Avoid them. I sincerely hope they go out of business because they're not the ISP that I joined over 20 years ago. They don't have the stones to deal with an unhappy customer, so I hope they have fun with the Ombudsman.
Very poor if you have satellite broadband.
All of a sudden iinet are sending messages telling me I have overstepped my data limit, then they slow my speed right down to almost unusable. I have been with them for over 21 years and am doing nothing different. They can’t/won’t let me pay for extra data so I have to wait at the end of every month until my next block kicks in. Practically impossible to get hold of them, and useless when you do. I’m changing ISP this month.
Enshittification in its purest form
A customer of 20 years, and a former iiNet reseller. I've just departed for Superloop. Dozens of my customers will follow soon. It's an end of an era. Watching the slow demise of a once great ISP was painful but educational. Previously legendary customer service is now quite possibly the worst in the observable Universe. You can spend hours talking to twenty different CSRs, and not even one of them will have any clue. If anyone ever asks you what enshittification is, be sure to give them iiNet as the best example of the phenomenon.
